Banter Blitz Cup final

Gukesh, fresh from his Gelfand Challenge triumph, takes on Johan Sebastian Christiansen today as the San Fermin Banter Blitz Cup qualifiers continue. The D Qualifier also sees the likes of Baadur Jobava and 14-year-old Grandmaster Marc’Andria Maurizzi in action. They’re fighting to join the already qualified Adhiban, Jan-Krzysztof Duda and Liem Quang Le in an 8-player final that will decide a player in the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour and also next month’s San Fermin festival in Pamplona, where World Champion Magnus Carlsen plays.

The month-long Banter Blitz Cup qualifying features eight 8-player knockouts, and with the D Qualifier starting today we reach the midway point. As you can see, it’s quite a line-up, with today’s quarterfinals including some real prodigies: 15-year-old Gukesh holds the record as the 2nd youngest grandmaster of all time, 14-year-old Maurizzi recently became the youngest ever French Grandmaster and 20-year-old Polina Shuvalova was the 2019 World Girls Junior Champion.

The likes of dancing chess genius Baadur Jobava and Argentinian no. 1 and Meltwater Champions Chess Tour player Alan Pichot require no introduction.

The schedule for today, Wednesday June 16th, is as follows (all times CEST).

  • 15:00: Christiansen vs. Gukesh
  • 17:00: Cheparinov vs. Shuvalova
  • 19:00: Jobava vs. Santos
  • 21:00: Pichot vs. Maurizzi

Carlsen vs 16-year-old Firouzja in the Banter Blitz Cup final

World Champion Magnus Carlsen will play his new arch-rival 16-year-old Alireza Firouzja in the Banter Blitz Cup final after Alireza beat S.L. Narayanan 9:6 in by far his toughest match of the event to date. The semi-final threatened to be a walkover like Magnus Carlsen’s 9:0 win over Sanan Sjugirov, but after Firouzja played a brilliant first game and then reached 2:0 his Indian opponent hit back and eventually went on to win 4 games. Only a blunder in the 15th and final game prevented a nail-biting finale.

After 131 matches involving a total of 133 players we’re down to the final two, with Magnus Carlsen set to play Alireza Firouzja in the final next week, where the winner will take home $14,000. Magnus cruised into the final 9:0, but Alireza had a much tougher time against S.L. Narayanan.

The Magnus Carlsen Invitational also starts a week today – with an announcement of the full line-up coming soon – while we have some more very exciting events lined up before that! Stay tuned to chess24 for non-stop action.

Banter Blitz Cup quarterfinals begin

Magnus Carlsen takes on Nils Grandelius on Thursday as the Banter Blitz Cup quarterfinals begin. In the semi-finals the winner of that match will take on the winner of Saturday’s Ray Robson vs. Sanan Sjugirov. On the other side of the draw is 16-year-old Alireza Firouzja, who’s conceded no more than 2 points in any match so far. He’s likely to be tested harder by Georg Meier, who’s crushed the dreams of Jan-Krzysztof Duda and Parham Maghsoodloo, while Eduardo Iturrizaga takes on S.L. Narayanan.
